Respite Child Care
Respite care is temporary, occasional, fully-licensed child care provided by the South Sound YMCA at certain locations for children whose parent or guardian needs temporary respite from their role as primary caregiver in the absence of a deployed spouse. It is completely free to eligible families and paid for through a Department of Defense initiative.
Who is eligible?
Military personnel (Title 10) who are eligible to receive the respite care benefits include: 1. Families of joint deployed Army National Guard and Reservists of all military branches 2. Families of Active Duty Independent Duty personnel 3. Relocated spouses and family members of deployed Active Duty personnel
How will eligibility by verified by the YMCA?
Eligible families will present a copy of: 1. Military Dependent ID card; and 2. Dependent ID card of child if over 10; and 3. Spouses’s Deployment Orders
What type of child care services will the YMCA provide?
The YMCA will provide high-quality, licensed child care at designated locations for short periods of time.
What age groups of children are the YMCA able to serve?
The YMCA can provide school-age children (5 to 12 years old) with care at a number of designated locations. In addition, the YMCA can provide care for children 3 months to 5 years old at the Campus Child Care Center at South Puget Sound Community College.
Does respite child care include full-time child care at a YMCA child care center?
No. Respite child care is designed to offer temporary relief to the primary caregiver of a military family for up to 16 hours a month.
Can I just show up at a designated location?
No. Eligible families must make an appointment to register with the YMCA before using care.
