Earth Service Corps
Calling All Youth! Ages 14 – 19! Do you want to take action and become an environmental leader in our community? Are you interested in saving the world? Join the YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC), a national YMCA program that teaches young people caring, honesty, respect and responsibility through community action. You can get involved in YESC through your high school’s environmental club or by coming to meetings at the downtown YMCA on Friday afternoons at 3:30. YESC mission: We empower young people to be effective, responsible global citizens by providing opportunities for environmental education and action, leadership development and cross-cultural awareness. This year YESC has built an environmentally themed haunted house, worked on habitat restoration through an invasive ivy pull and tree planting, helped with school recycling, made a video on the dangers to our environment from cell phones going to landfills, and more. Upcoming projects include a cell phone recycling drive, further work with habitat restoration, teaching grade school students about backyard habitat and helping them build pine cone bird feeders, monitoring local stream quality, a tree planting, a movie night, and having lots of fun.
